On August 26, 2026, Shopify stopped running scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages on every plan except Plus. If your ads suddenly stopped seeing purchases, this is most likely why. Below we'll walk through how to check your store, move your Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest and GA4 pixels to Customer Events, and make sure conversions are coming through again.
Step 01What was switched off on August 26 and whether your store is affected
On August 26, 2026, Shopify stopped executing script tags and any code in the "Additional scripts" field on the Thank you and Order status pages for all plans except Plus: Basic, Grow and Advanced. Plus stores went through this earlier - their order status page scripts were turned off back on August 28, 2025.
Here's what that means in practice. The Facebook, TikTok or Google pixel you once pasted into "Additional scripts" no longer fires on the "Thank you for your order" page. Sales keep coming in, but your ads can't see them. The algorithm starts optimizing blind, and you're staring at a zero ROAS, convinced the campaign is dead.
Checking whether you're affected takes a couple of minutes:
- Go to Settings → Checkout and look at the Configurations section. If there's an upgrade notice, your pages are still on the old version.
- On the same page, find the "Additional scripts" box. If there's code in it, that's exactly what stopped working. Since August 28, 2025, the field has been read-only.
- Compare your Shopify orders over the past few weeks with purchases in Events Manager. A sharp gap starting August 26 is a sure sign.
Step 02List everything you need to restore
Before installing anything, go through the saved code line by line. There are usually four or five things in there: the Meta pixel, TikTok, Pinterest, a Google Analytics or Google Ads tag, and sometimes an affiliate script or a "How did you hear about us?" survey.
For each line, answer one question: does this service have an official app in the Shopify App Store? For Meta, TikTok, Pinterest and Google the answer is yes, and that's the easiest route. Anything an app doesn't cover goes into a custom pixel (Step 05).
The most convenient way through is the built-in upgrade guide. In the notice under Settings → Checkout, click Review: Shopify will group your scripts by purpose and show which apps are already compatible. In the Apps section, under "Tracking and analytics", the Manage button takes you to the app pixel settings.
Step 03Facebook and TikTok: moving over with the official apps
The new system is called Customer Events (Web Pixels). Pixels are no longer pasted into the page as code. Instead, they subscribe to standard Shopify events: page view, add to cart, checkout completed. They run in a sandbox, so you can't just copy over your old code from "Additional scripts".
Meta (Facebook and Instagram)
- Install the Facebook & Instagram app by Meta from the Shopify App Store.
- Connect your business account, ad account and pixel - use the same ID as in your old code so you don't lose the data you've built up.
- In the data sharing settings, choose a level. There are three: Standard, Enhanced and Maximum. According to Shopify's help docs, Maximum is the one that uses both the pixel and the Conversions API, meaning some events are sent from the server, not just from the browser.
Keep in mind: the Maximum level sends customers' personal data to Meta for matching. Make sure your privacy policy reflects this, especially if you sell in the EU. If you haven't set up ad payments yet, see our article on how to pay for Facebook ads from Russia and Belarus.
TikTok
Install the official TikTok app from the App Store, sign in to TikTok For Business, and select your ad account and pixel. The app sets up the subscription to your store's events on its own. TikTok renames steps in its setup wizard often, so go by what you see on screen rather than old screenshots.
Step 04Pinterest and Google Analytics 4
Pinterest. Same process: the official Pinterest app from the App Store, sign in to your business account, pick your tag. Once it's connected, remove the old Pinterest Tag code from your theme and "Additional scripts", or purchases will be counted twice.
GA4. Install the Google & YouTube app, sign in with a Google account that has admin access to the right GA4 property, select the property and connect it. The app sends standard store events, including purchases at checkout. Google's help docs note that properties not moved to this app before February 2, 2025 were converted into custom pixels - check Settings → Customer events to see whether you've inherited one of these.
Step 05No app available? Use a custom pixel
For affiliate networks, Google Ads without the app, or niche trackers, there's the custom pixel. Shopify says plainly that this feature is meant for people who know JavaScript, and Shopify support won't help with that code. If you're not a developer, it's better to hand this off to one or find an app.
Here's the process according to Shopify's help docs:
- Go to Settings → Customer events, enter a name for the pixel and click Add pixel.
- In the Customer privacy section, set the Permission: whether the customer needs to consent to marketing or analytics.
- Paste your code into the Code window. The code has to subscribe to Shopify events, such as checkout completed, otherwise it won't send anything.
- Click Save, then Connect pixel.
Before connecting, delete any old copies of the same pixel from theme.liquid and "Additional scripts". Shopify warns about this itself: otherwise your events will be duplicated.
Step 06Make sure conversions are coming through again
Setting up the pixels is only half the job. The other half is confirming that purchases actually reach your ad account. It sounds like a lot, but in reality it takes about 20 minutes.
- Test order. Turn on test mode for payments, or place a real order for a cheap product and refund it afterward. We covered how to do this with Stripe in our article on test payments.
- Shopify Pixel Helper. This is a Chrome extension from Shopify. It shows whether a pixel loaded and which events it's subscribed to. For custom pixels, Settings → Customer events has a Test button that opens your storefront with the pixel active. You can only test one custom pixel at a time. Google Tag Assistant doesn't work with custom pixels.
- Events Manager. In Meta, open the Test Events tab and go through the path to purchase. A Purchase event should appear. TikTok and Pinterest have similar event testing sections in their dashboards.
- GA4. Check the Realtime report. According to Google, full reports can take 24-48 hours to update, so don't panic if a purchase doesn't show up in the standard reports after five minutes.
If your test customer declined the cookie banner, pixels that require consent won't fire. When testing, accept everything.
Step 07Script tag apps and Shopify Scripts
These are separate stories, but both hit the same stores.
Script tag apps
According to Shopify's official changelog, starting October 1, 2026, apps can no longer create or update script tags through the API. Ones that are already installed keep working on the storefront until March 1, 2027, after which Shopify will stop loading them. Since October 1, when you install an app like this, Shopify shows a warning banner saying some of its features will stop working.
What to do: go through your app list, paying special attention to old review widgets, chats, countdown timers and pop-ups. Contact the developer and ask whether the app has moved to theme app extensions. If you don't hear back by winter, start looking for a replacement now rather than in February. You can find a selection of tried-and-tested apps in our article 5 best Shopify apps.
Shopify Scripts
These are scripts Plus stores use for discounts, shipping and payment methods. They've been locked for editing and publishing since April 15, 2026, and as of June 30, 2026, they stopped running entirely. The replacement is Shopify Functions: either through public apps from the App Store or your own custom functions. If your discounts "quietly" stopped applying over the summer, this is most likely the reason. Shopify's help docs include a Scripts customizations report that will tell you what to replace with what.
Wrap-upA one-evening checklist
- Open Settings → Checkout, check for the upgrade notice, and copy the code from "Additional scripts" if it's still visible.
- List the pixels and trackers that were in there.
- Install the official Facebook & Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and Google & YouTube apps using the same pixel IDs.
- Move everything else to a custom pixel via Customer events, or hand it off to a developer.
- Remove old duplicates from your theme.
- Place a test order and confirm you see Purchase in Pixel Helper, Events Manager and GA4.
- Check your script tag apps before March 1, 2027, and make sure your Plus discounts run on Functions.
The dates and button names here are taken from Shopify's help docs at the time of writing. The interface changes, so if something looks different, check the official upgrade guide and the script tags page.
